The Physician-Patient Relationship Revisited - the Patient's View
The importance of the physician-patient relationship for the health care market is beyond controversy. Most theoretical work is done in a principal-agent framework, dealing with moral hazard problems. Recent work emphasizes a two-sided asymmetric information relationship between physician and patient (double moral hazard). In contrast to most work looking only at the physician's perspectives, our paper concentrates on the patient's view. Estimation results using panel data support the hypotheses that physician consultation and health-relevant behavior are not stochastically independent. This means that health care demand is determined by the patient and not only by the physician. In the recursive bivariate probit model, the patient’s health-relevant behavior has a significant positive influence on the probability of a physician visit. This should be taken into account in the discussion that primary care physicians should function as gatekeepers.physician-patient relationship, health behavior, bivariate probit
Health Relevant Behavior and its Impact on the Physician-Patient Relationship

This means that health care demand and not only the contact decision is determined by both, patient and physician.physician-patient relationship, health behavior, bivariate probit panel
I feel good! Gender differences and reporting heterogeneity in self-assessed health
For empirical analysis and policy-oriented recommendation, the precise measurement of individual health or well-being is essential. The problem with variables based on questionnaires such as self-assessed health is that the answer may depend on individual reporting behaviour. Moreover, if individual‟s health perception varies with certain attitudes of the respondent reporting heterogenei-ty may lead to index or cut-point shifts of the health distribution, causing estimation problems. We analyse the reporting behaviour of individuals on their self-assessed health status, a five-point categorical variable. We explore observed heterogeneity in categorical variables and include unob-served individual heterogeneity using German panel data. Estimation results show different im-pacts of socioeconomic and health related variables on the five subscales of self-assessed health. Moreover, the answering behaviour varies between female and male respondents, pointing to gen-der specific perception and assessment of diseases. Reporting behaviour on self-assessed health questions in surveys is problematic due to a possible heterogeneity. Hence, in case of reporting heterogeneity, using self-assessed measures in empirical studies may be misleading or at least ambiguous.reporting heterogeneity, generalized ordered probit, self-assessed health

Position control of an industrial robot using an optical measurement system for machining purposes
A series of mechanical properties and disturbances limit the accuracy achievable in robotic applications. External control of the end effector position is commonly known as being an appropriate mean to increase accuracy. This paper presents an approach for position control of industrial robots using the pass-through between an industrial CNC and servomotors. A CNC-controlled robot is used together with an external optical measurement system to close the feedback loop of robot end effector and robot controller in order to improve robot accuracy. For short cycle times and implementation reasons a PLC is used for signal processing and control implementation. The relevance of the approach is outlined in experiments. The robot behaviour in free space motion and in machining application is analysed with the optical measurement system and a CMM
Characterization of the murine cytomegalovirus genes encoding the major DNA binding protein and the ICP18.5 homolog
In several herpesviruses the genes for the major DNA binding protein (MDBP), a putative assembly protein, the
glycoprotein B (gB), and the viral DNA polymerase (pol) coliocate. In murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV), two members
of this gene block, pol (Elliott, Clark, Jaquish, and Spector, 1991, Virology 185, 169-186) and gB (Rapp, Messerle,
BOhler, Tannheimer, Keil, and Koszinowski, 1992, J. Virol., 66,4399-4406) have been characterized. Here the two other
MCMV genes are characterized, the gene encoding the MDBP and the ICP18.5 homolog encoding a putative
assembly protein. Like in human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) the genes order is pol, gB, ICP18.5, and MDBP. The 4.2-kb
MDBP mRNA is expressed first in the early phase, whereas the 3.0-kb ICP18.5 mRNA is a late transcript. The open
reading frame of the MDBP gene has the capacity of encoding a protein of 1191 amino acids with a predicted molecular
mass of 131.7 kDa. The MCMV ICP18.5 ORF is translated into a polypeptide of 798 amino acids with a calculated
molecular mass of 89.1 kDa. Comparison of the amino acid sequences of the predicted proteins of MCMV with the
respective proteins of HCMV, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) reveals a striking
homology ranging from 72% (HCMV), 50% (EBV), to 45% (HSV-1) for the MDBP sequence and from 74% (HCMV), 51 %
(EBV), to 49% (HSV-1) for the ICP18.5 sequence. These results establish the elose relationship of the two cytomegaloviruses,
and underline the usefulness of the murine model for studies on the biology of the CMV infection
Eclecticism rediscovered: [Rezension zu: ]Michael Albrecht, Eklektik. Eine Begriffsgeschichte mit Hinweisen auf die Philosophie- und Wissenschaftsgeschichte, Stuttgart 1994 und Patrice Vermeren, Victor Cousin. Le Jeu de La Philosophie et de l''Etat, Paris 1995
Whatever the significance of the postmodern state of mind, recent views concerning philosophical eclecticism are largely the product of researches into the history of philosophy. There is an obvious inclination of today''s intellectual historians to investigate background figures of European modernity. The increasing willingness of historians to enlarge the notion of philosophy in both its disciplinary and historical definition seems to be in agreement with a similar disposition of contemporary philosophers. As we can learn from Michael Albrecht''s and Patrice Vermeren''s books, a critical appreciation of eclecticism throws light both on the conditions of contemporary philosophizing and on the politics of philosophy in the modern age
Coherent Interaction of a Single Fermion with a Small Bosonic Field
We have experimentally studied few-body impurity systems consisting of a
single fermionic atom and a small bosonic field on the sites of an optical
lattice. Quantum phase revival spectroscopy has allowed us to accurately
measure the absolute strength of Bose-Fermi interactions as a function of the
interspecies scattering length. Furthermore, we observe the modification of
Bose-Bose interactions that is induced by the interacting fermion. Because of
an interference between Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi phase dynamics, we can infer
the mean fermionic filling of the mixture and quantify its increase (decrease)
when the lattice is loaded with attractive (repulsive) interspecies
interactions.Comment: 4+ pages, 5 figures, updated to <a
